Marianne as Lilith in Lucifer Rising
I had the pleasure of seeing Marianne Faithfull perform a solo show at the Opera House last night. It was fantastic, but somewhat ruined by a crazy heckler who did not shut up the entire show and really disrupted the flow of things. Although a bit of a highlight was when a 60-ish year old woman sitting near me got up and screamed at said heckler in the box next to ours to "SHUT THE FUCK UP!".
I came to the gig really only knowing her work on Broken English and not expecting all that much. I was genuinely surprised, she did some really interesting covers, from Neko Case "Hold On, Hold On", Dolly Parton "Down from Dover", Duke Ellington "Solitude" and even chucked in some Morrissey!
My favourite song was "Why D'ya Do It" which has such great lyrics and the song is just made for her gravel voice. She also sang "As Tears Go By" not long after, which was a nice comparison. She's definitely an addition to my growing GRAND OLD DAMES collection.
What a difference a few years, rockstar boyfriends and a hardcore herion habit can make... especially to a voice.
